What 鎮 means
鎮 means to press down, steady, or guard. An early form appears in bronze inscriptions. Its 金 component, meaning metal, gave a clue to the meaning, while 炅 suggested the sound. In the later small-seal script, an early standardized script, 真 took over that sound role. 鎮 began as a heavy metal weight or object used to press something down. From “hold down” came “suppress” or “calm,” then “guard a place” and the guarded settlement itself.
Why does 鎮 mean town?
A garrison could grow into a market settlement. During Northern Wei rule, 鎮 referred to a military garrison and its troops. During Tang and Five Dynasties times, commanders placed such posts at strategic economic points. Under Song rule, the word came to mean a small settlement within a county, often a commercial center. The place sense grew from the idea of holding territory, not from a separate unrelated character.
Can I send 鎮 by itself?
A bare 鎮 does not settle which meaning is intended. This character builds words, so by itself it leaves pressing, calming, suppression, guarding, garrison, and town in play. Ask which language or word it belongs to; in Japanese, the same character also appears in words for calming, suppressing, or a weight.
Formal and context-dependent: 鎮 fits compounds, place names, and historical language better than a bare chat fragment.
A lone 鎮 does not mean only “calm”; “town” and “garrison” remain possible.

1Why does 鎮 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
