What 鏫 means
A variant of 鑗 (lí): “metal”, or “to peel, to cut”.
The senses come through the Shuowen Jiezi, a Han-era dictionary. The Kangxi Dictionary (1716) records 鏫 as a variant of 鑗, citing the earlier dictionary 字彙補; Taiwan's Ministry of Education variant table adds 鋫, 錅 and 𨬏 as further forms.
Old records also apply the word to iron caltrops — linked triangular iron pieces laid on roads or shallow water to stop attackers.

1Why does 鏫 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
