What 鏮 means
It identifies scandium in older Chinese element terminology. In late-Qing China, Xu Shou and John Fryer developed a compact system for naming new elements: each character paired a sound-bearing part with a component that signaled its material class. The method was published in 1871. 鏮 fits the pattern: 金 marks metal, while 康 supplies the sound.
Gwoyeu Tsyrdean, a Chinese dictionary, lists 鏮 for scandium in editions from 1936 and 1947. A 2016 traditional-Chinese reference uses 鈧; a 2011 simplified-Chinese government reference uses 钪. All refer to scandium, but each is a distinct character, so preserve the form printed in the source.
Technical and archival: an older scientific label for scandium.
When quoting older material, keep 鏮; later references use 鈧 or 钪.
