What 鑎 means

It means a box or chest. The older character 匱 is defined as a box in Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary. Jiyun, another historical Chinese dictionary, records 鑎 as a variant of 匱, with 金, the metal sign, on its left.

This link is specific to 匱’s guì reading for a box. 匱 also has a separate kuì reading meaning “shortage”; 鑎 does not take that sense in the variant entry.
