What 鑣 means
鑣 names the horse bit in a bridle.
The Han-era Chinese character dictionary 說文解字 glosses 鑣 as 馬銜 (“horse bit”). Studies of ancient East Asian horse gear discuss it alongside 轡 (“reins”) and distinguish Han-style bits from those associated with the Xiongnu people across the 3rd century BCE–3rd century CE.
揚鑣 means urging a horse forward; 分道揚鑣 turns that image into parting ways.
Literal horse-tack use is specialized.
For a horse bit, use 鑣; 鏢 means dart.

1Why does 鑣 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
