Character 铂 (platinum)

It means platinum; older dictionaries also record “metal foil.”

The older sense names a thin metal sheet. The Ministry of Education dictionary cites 《集韻》's 金薄 gloss and connects 鉑 with 箔; the Chinese Text Project also preserves historical examples such as 金鉑. That trail does not prove that ancient writers meant modern platinum.

Modern chemistry gave the character a new job. One diachronic study lists platinum as 白金 in the 1868 格物入门 table and as 鉑 in the 1871 化学鉴原 table, showing terminology moving from a descriptive name toward the character used today.

Is 铂 the same as 白金?

Not always: jewelry context can make 白金 ambiguous.

Hong Kong's 2009 government guidance uses 白金/鉑金 for platinum and 白色黃金 for white gold. A Chinese jewelry-standard text also lists 铂, 铂金, and 白金 among platinum labels. If you are naming a product, 铂金 or a Pt fineness mark keeps the material clearer.

Which form should I type?

Use 铂 in simplified text and 鉑 in traditional text.
