What 铋 means
It is the Chinese character for bismuth.
Mandarin reads it bì: begin with a p sound without a strong puff of air, say i, and let the pitch fall. In the simplified form, 钅 marks a metal and 必 cues the sound.
A Chinese-language science book from 1855 translated some element names. In 1871, translators Xu Shou and John Fryer proposed a one-character method that joins a sound to a material marker; chemistry books in the 1870s still varied.
Technical and neutral: it names the element bismuth in Chinese writing.
