Chinese character 锓

18196/20992

锓 means “to carve”; in bookmaking it names the woodcutting step that makes a printing block. It survives chiefly in terms such as 锓梓 and 锓枣, and 鋟 is its traditional form. Alone, it reads more like a rare-character reference than a chat reaction.

What 锓 means

It is a verb for cutting words or designs into wood.

A classical witness appears in the Gongyang Commentary, an old commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals: it says Yang Hu 鋟其板, cutting his warning into a board.

In later bookmaking vocabulary, 锓梓 means carving and printing from catalpa wood; 锓枣 means the same work with jujube wood. The woodblock printing workflow explains the shift: a page was transferred to wood, carved, inked, and pressed onto paper.

How did carving become a printing term?

Woodblock printing made carving part of publishing.

The woodblock printing workflow turned the carved board into a reusable page: the raised surface held ink and transferred the text onto paper.

Dictionaries record Japanese readings セン, チン, and きざむ, Korean 침, and Vietnamese xăm for 鋟. As of 2026, it has no established chat or slang meaning.

Why does 锓 appear as 鋟?

鋟 is the traditional form; 锓 is the simplified form.

Fonts and script settings can change the displayed outline without changing which character the text represents.

Rare and bookish; use it for classical or bibliographic carving and printing, not as an everyday replacement for 刻 or 雕刻.

Sent alone, it can look like a typo or a vocabulary question.

Questions people ask

3

Is 锓 used in everyday Chinese?

Usually not; it appears chiefly in classical or bookmaking terms. For ordinary writing, 刻 or 雕刻 says “carve” more plainly.

Why does 锓 appear as 鋟?

They are the same word in simplified and traditional Chinese writing: 锓 is simplified, and 鋟 is traditional.

Can I send 锓 by itself?

You can, but without context it reads as a rare-character reference. Add a short explanation if you mean carving or historical printing.
