What 锨 means
A shovel with a broad, nearly square head. A Ming agricultural manual specifies iron 锨 for soil, wooden 锨 for grain, and an iron-edged wooden form for trimming field ridges.
An older dictionary describes 杴 as a kind of 鍬, another digging tool. A Kangxi-era dictionary preserves two older notes: 杴 as a water-draining tool, and an account of a rhythmic regional dance using long-handled wooden 杴.
