What 锷 means
It is the sharpened side of a knife or sword blade.
The Zhuangzi, an early Chinese philosophy book, uses 鍔 beside 锋 for edge and tip. Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, records older 㓵 with the same weapon-part sense.
Japanese references also use 鍔 for blade points, hat brims and kettle rims, and list 鐔 as a variant. A surviving Japanese tsuba dates to ca. 3rd–7th century.
Technical and literary in Chinese; specialist sword vocabulary in Japanese.

1Why does 锷 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
