CJK Unified Ideograph-95Ac

閬 means “high gate,” with classical extensions to “lofty,” “spacious,” and “empty.” You meet it in names such as 閬中, 閬風, and 閬苑; in a message, read it through the surrounding word or name. In simplified text, it appears as 阆.

What 閬 means

It originally names a high gate.

The early explanation makes it semantic-phonetic: 門 gives the meaning, 良 gives the sound. From that gate sense, classical use extends it to height, openness, emptiness, and a dry moat.

Why does 閬 appear in names?

Its surviving uses are place names and paradise imagery.

Early records attach it to 巴郡閬中縣, the Langzhong county name, while 閬風 and 閬苑 belong to Kunlun and immortal-garden lore. As of 2026, the consulted history record shows Qin bamboo-slip, clerical, and later forms, but no oracle- or bronze-form entry.

Why does 閬 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
