What 闔 means
A door leaf, “to shut,” or the whole group.
One oracle-bone form is catalogued as 合4853/4854. The Han-era Shuowen Jiezi dictionary records “door leaf” and “close”; it treats 門 as meaning and 盍 as sound.
The Han-era Book of Han uses 闔郡 for a whole commandery. Formal 闔家 and 闔府 mean the whole family or household.
Literary and formal; standalone use can sound archaic.
In 闔家, 闔 means “whole,” not “close.”

1Why does 闔 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
