What 闩 means

A sliding door bar, or fastening the door with one.

The bar slides across a closed door. Mandarin uses 门闩 for the bar and 闩门 for fastening it.

Cantonese uses 閂門 for closing a door or shop; Hakka uses it to secure a door. In 1175, a Chinese account from the Southern Song, a ruling dynasty, records 閂 as a local written form for a horizontal door closure.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 闩 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
