Chinese Ask Character

It means “ask” or “inquire.” In Mandarin, pinyin—the system for writing its sounds in Latin letters—gives wèn, or wen4 with a number instead of a tone mark. Plain wen can represent other characters too.

In Chinese, 问 is used for asking a question or making an inquiry. In a compound, it can also mean investigating, checking on someone’s welfare, sending regards, or demanding accountability. Read the whole word to learn which action is meant.

Is 问 the same as 問?

Yes: 問 is the traditional Chinese counterpart of 问. Traditional Chinese writing uses 問; simplified Chinese uses 问. Japanese uses 問 in words such as 問い, meaning “question.” Korean 문의하다 means “to inquire”; its Hanja spelling is 問議하다. Hanja are Chinese-derived characters used in Korean.

Traditional character analysis treats 門 as the sound-related part and 口 as the meaning-related part. Simplified 问 uses 门 in place of 門.

A paleographic study published in 2012 disputes two Shang oracle-bone forms commonly identified as 問. It identifies clear 問 in late Warring States Qin bamboo slips, used for questioning and investigation. Earlier bronze inscriptions and Chu slips sometimes used 聞 or 昏 for the same word; these are alternate writings, not proven steps in a single sequence leading to modern 问.

What does 问 signal in a message?

Read the whole word before judging the tone. If a message contains only 问, it points to “ask” or “question”; the character alone does not tell you whether the sender is being polite or reproachful.

请问 opens a courteous question. 问候 means sending greetings or checking on someone. 责问 demands an explanation and sounds reproachful. Replacing 请问 with 责问 turns a request into a call to account.
