It marks the boundary at a doorway.
Its concrete sense is the raised crosspiece at a doorway; by extension, it also means a limit or cutoff. The sill separated inside from outside and could keep out dust and wind. In classical Chinese ritual, stepping across it improperly could signal disrespect. Shuowen, a classical Chinese dictionary, defines the traditional form 閾 this way and cites the Analects, a collection of sayings attributed to Confucius. Older Chinese texts also use 榍 and 柣 for a doorway crosspiece.
Why does 阈 appear in technical terms?
The doorway sense also describes measured limits.
阈值 means a threshold value; 视阈 and 听阈 refer to visual and hearing limits. Japanese medical writing adopted the traditional form 閾 for threshold terminology from the late 18th to early 19th centuries.
