陓 appears in 楊陓, a historical name for a wetland, not a general word for lakes. Its Mandarin pronunciation is yū: say “ee” with rounded lips as for “oo,” on a high, even tone. The exact site is unsettled.

What 陓 means

It is a wetland name. The Erya, an early Chinese reference book, has the earliest record. Cantonese sources list jyu1 or wu1 in Jyutping, a way to write Cantonese sounds.

Older records write the name 楊紆. Later texts compare 楊陓 with 陽華 and 陽盱 by sound, but whether they refer to one site is unsettled. By 2024, Taiwan's Ministry of Education variant-character dictionary notes that 陓 is absent from the Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary.

Historical and specialist; its exact drawing depends on the reader's font.

Use it in the historic place-name, not as a general lake word.

1

Why does 陓 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
