What 隲 means
It is a variant of 騭, whose old sense is “male horse.”
《說文解字》, an early Chinese character dictionary, defines 騭 as a male horse and links it to 陟, “to rise.” This link also gives 騭 the senses of rising and advancement.
《尚書·洪範》 uses 陰騭 for Heaven’s quiet protection of the people. Later glosses connect it with 陰德, virtue practiced out of public view; 陰隲 is a variant spelling.
Classical and lexicographic in tone; a deliberate variant spelling.

1Why does 隲 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
