What 雗 means
It names a bird, but older sources disagree which bird. A related graph is recorded on a bronze vessel from China’s Western Zhou period. The Eastern Han dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, compiled around 100 CE and submitted in 121 CE, gives 雗’s recognizable entry; it reflects a developing written tradition. 隹 marks “bird,” while 倝 hints at sound. Shuowen glosses it as 山鵲 (“mountain magpie”); Erya, another early Chinese reference, gives “white pheasant,” including a Jiangdong regional name (from eastern China).
Archaic and dictionary-like; unusual in casual chat.
