What 霌 means
It describes a cloudy, rainy appearance. 霌 is a Chinese character; in Mandarin, it is read zhōu, roughly like “choh” with a high, level tone.
The earliest dictionary record cited for 霌 belongs to the 玉篇 tradition, an early Chinese-character dictionary first compiled c. 543 during China’s Liang dynasty. Later dictionaries cite 玉篇, but that does not prove 霌 survives unchanged in the text we have: the work was revised, and its surviving version differs from the Liang-era compilation.
A 2024 record in Taiwan’s Ministry of Education variant-character dictionary notes that the earlier 說文 dictionary does not list 霌. Later dictionaries and digitized texts repeat the weather gloss; some indexed hits are personal names or OCR fragments, so a match alone does not establish another meaning. The documented record also includes the dictionary 篇海.
Archaic and dictionary-bound; it suits a rare-character or classical-text context, not everyday chat.
If it arrives alone, read it as text first and ask for context before treating it as a reaction.
