What 靿 means
It describes the tube that rises from the foot. 靴靿 means boot shaft; 袜靿, sock tube. Older glosses can extend 靿 to the whole footwear item.
The 2024 character-variant entry says the Shuowen dictionary omits 靿; the Yupian dictionary glosses 靴靿. Sui dynasty records link long shafts to hunting; later accounts link them to riding and court dress. A 2017 dialect survey records boot- and sock-tube senses in Mandarin and Jin, a northern Chinese variety group.
