What 鞗 means
Type tiao in a Chinese Pinyin input method, then check the candidates.
Its Mandarin Pinyin reading is tiáo, shared with more familiar characters such as 條 and 調; those may appear first.
What does 鞗 mean?
It names a horse’s leather rein or a strap on its bridle.
In 《诗经·小雅·蓼萧》, a poem in the Book of Poetry, 鞗革忡忡 appears alongside jingling chariot bells. Traditional commentators explain 鞗革 as the rein headpiece or its hanging ornament—the decorated tack at a horse’s head.
A Stone Drum inscription from the Eastern Zhou (475–221 BCE) has 鋚勒, a related horse-tack wording. It uses 鋚 rather than 鞗.
鞗 vs 䩦: what is the difference?
䩦 is a variant; 鋚 is connected, but the link is disputed.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Education lists 䩦 as an alternate form of 鞗. Traditional dictionaries also connect 鋚 with 鞗, while one commentary treats the two as different parts of horse tack. When quoting a source, keep its exact glyph.
Classical, technical, and rare; it belongs in writing about historical horse tack, not everyday chat.
Without horse-tack or classical context, an unexplained 鞗 can look like a typo.
