What 鞜 means
An old character for a leather shoe, especially one made from raw hide.
A Chinese teaching text from the Western Han dynasty, the primer 急就篇, lists 鞜 beside 履 and 舄. Later commentary glosses it as 生革之履, a shoe made from raw hide.
Japanese kanji dictionaries also retain 鞜 for footwear. In classical Chinese, the compound 鞺鞜 can describe drumbeats or clattering; that sound-word is a different context from the shoe sense.
What should I make of a message containing 鞜?
Read the surrounding words; the character alone does not settle its sense.
A footwear list points to the leather-shoe meaning; 鞺鞜 points to a drum or clatter sound-word. If a message contains only 鞜, ask whether it is a quotation, a character lookup, or a request for a reading.
Literary and specialist; the recorded uses are a footwear term and a drum-sound word.
A lone 鞜 does not show which sense is intended; ask for the surrounding sentence.
