What 韰 means
韰 means “narrow” or “confined.” In 韰果 and 韰惈, it describes someone limited in outlook but daring in conduct: a mixed judgment, not a plain compliment.
An inscription on the reverse of the Eastern Han Kong Zhou stele (孔宙碑), dated 164 CE, preserves an early written use of 韰. In the Western Jin, writer Zuo Si (左思) used 韰果 in 魏都賦, a long literary poem, to describe a local custom as cramped and daring.
Rare and literary; it fits a classical quotation or a discussion of older Chinese writing.
韰果 is not a plain compliment: “bold” comes with “narrow-minded.”
