What 韻 means
It means a patterned or harmonious sound.
The character is built from 音, meaning sound, plus phonetic 員. The original 說文 omits 韻; its received 大徐 addition glosses it “harmony.” A Han-era quotation uses 韻 for musical resonance. In medieval Chinese rime-book practice, it names rhyme categories and syllable finals; the tradition includes 切韻 (601), 廣韻, and 集韻. Japanese keeps the literary rhyme sense.
Literary and technical, not a casual reaction.
For ordinary sound, use 音; 韻 is narrower.

3Questions people ask
1Why does 韻 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
