Character 飯

飯 means food, cooked rice, or a meal, depending on the language and phrase around it. In Chinese it commonly appears in everyday eating phrases; in Japanese, 飯 read meshi is plainer than ご飯. The useful surprise is that its older dictionary sense is an action: “to eat.”

What 飯 means

It can cover eating, cooked grain, or the meal itself.

The character’s practical job was to write eating and what was eaten. It is a phono-semantic compound: 食 supplies the food sense, while 反 supplies the sound cue. A bronze form from the late Spring-and-Autumn period is recorded, and the Shuowen entry defines 飯 as 食, preserving the verb sense “to eat.”

The record keeps both branches: 飯 can mean feeding a person or an animal, while later usage covers cooked grain and a scheduled meal. The path is wider than a rice-only gloss, so read 吃飯 as having a meal.

What does 飯 mean when someone sends it alone?

Ask for the surrounding phrase before choosing a reading.

A standalone 飯 leaves several readings open: Chinese readers may hear fàn, while Japanese readers may read meshi or han. In Japanese, meshi is plainer than ご飯; in Chinese, the same graph is ordinary inside meal compounds. The language and neighboring words do more work than the glyph alone.

In Chinese fan-community slang, 飯圈 means a fan circle rather than a dining circle. A 2020 sociolinguistic study describes 饭圈 as network language built from the English word fan; traditional writing renders the same term as 飯圈.

Why does 飯 look different in Chinese and Japanese fonts?

The font chooses the regional glyph; the character identity stays shared.

Unicode encodes Han characters, not one universal drawing. Traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean conventions can use different glyph shapes, so the same 飯 can look subtly different across a localized font. If it looks slightly wrong, check the font or locale before deciding the text is wrong.

In Chinese compounds it is ordinary; in Japanese, 飯 read meshi is plainer than the more polite ご飯.

Do not translate 吃飯 as “eat rice” by default; it usually means to eat or have a meal.

Why does 飯 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
