餮 (Chinese character)

19247/20992

餮 usually appears as the second character in the Chinese word 饕餮, which can name a legendary beast, a glutton, or a greedy person. Beside food or an event, 饕餮 can instead praise abundance. The bronze mask motif called taotie is older than the label.

What 餮 means

餮 usually appears as the second character in Chinese 饕餮. The compound names a legendary beast and can also describe someone who is greedy or eats voraciously.

The taotie bronze mask motif, called 饕餮纹 in Chinese, is older than the label: its prototypes reach back to the Neolithic, with forms traced through the Erlitou archaeological culture (c. 1800–1600 BCE) and Erligang (1600–1400 BCE). One account places an early surviving example on a jue vessel, before the better-known ding cauldrons.

What the mask was meant to do is unsettled. On ritual bronzes from China's Shang dynasty, animal imagery accompanied sacrificial vessels and offerings; later texts describe such beings as warnings against danger. By the fourth century BCE, one scholarly account refers to the ornament more generically as “creatures,” making 饕餮 a retrospective label for an older design.

What does 饕餮 mean when someone sends it?

Check the neighboring words: it can insult a person or praise abundance. About a person, it is a rebuke for greed or gluttony; beside a meal or event, it signals a rich offering or full program.

Newspaper examples from 2002–2006 apply 饕餮 to sporting programs, performances, and cultural showcases, not just meals. The metaphor praises scale and plenty; it does not say that the event is literally a monster.

Literary and culturally loaded: aimed at a person, it condemns; beside a banquet or event, it praises abundance.

Calling someone 饕餮 is a moral insult, not playful praise for eating.

Why does 餮 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
