Nang

If you see 饢 on a menu, it names nang, a Central Asian baked bread; 馕 is its simplified form. Sent alone, 饢 is usually a food reference or a character lookup. In 饢糟 and 饢糠, a different Mandarin reading makes contemptuous expressions about stuffing food into the mouth.

What 饢 means

It names nang, a Central Asian baked bread; 馕 is its simplified form.

The Chinese word came through Uyghur nan, ultimately from Persian nân; English naan is related. In the graph, 飠 marks food and 囊 supplies the sound. The bread is a portable, dry food suited to travel through an arid region.

A 2023 archaeology summary describes bread-like cakes from Hami’s Wubao cemetery as more than 3,000 years old; that find does not establish the modern name or recipe. Earlier Chinese writing used 胡饼 and 炉饼 as broad labels for incoming baked breads. The Taiwan Ministry of Education entry noted in 2024 that 《说文》 does not record this exact graph, so its earliest written use remains unsettled.

What does 饢 mean when someone sends it?

Usually, food or a character lookup; it is not a standard reaction.

Mandarin distinguishes the readings by pitch: the bread word rises, while the reading in these compounds dips and rises and means “to cram food into the mouth.” 饢糟 and 饢糠 are contemptuous expressions about greedy eating, not names for bad bread.

A 2015 account of customs in Xinjiang, in northwest China, describes the bread at weddings and farewells as hospitality, shared good fortune, and a gift for the road. That symbolism belongs to the bread tradition; a bare character does not imply it.

How do I type 饢?

Type nang in a Traditional Chinese input source and choose 饢.

A Chinese Pinyin input method accepts nang without tone marks; in Traditional Chinese mode, choose 饢. A Simplified Chinese source may instead offer 馕. Cangjie is a Chinese input method that encodes character shapes: enter OIJBV and choose that candidate.

If your font lacks 饢, a missing-character box or fallback glyph may appear; the stored text remains 饢.

A bare 饢 in general chat reads as a specific food reference or a character lookup.

Use 饢糟 or 饢糠 only when you intend an insult about greedy eating.

Why does 饢 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
