駚 describes a horse’s appearance or a beast leaping and pouncing on itself. An ancient Chinese classic gives the animal sense; dictionary compounds preserve the horse sense.

Text symbol

What 駚 means

It means a horse’s look or an animal’s leaping motion.

The ancient Chinese classic 《山海經》 (“Classic of Mountains and Seas”) has a chapter on the Central Mountains (中山經), where 駚 appears with 獜, a dog-like beast with tiger claws and armor. Its commentator Guo Pu (郭璞) glosses 駚 as leaping and pouncing on itself.

The rhyme dictionaries 《廣韻》 and 《集韻》, organized by sound, preserve 駚驡 for a horse’s appearance and 駚𤘝 for an animal leaping and pouncing on itself.

Classical written vocabulary for historical or dictionary contexts.

The 馬 (“horse”) component does not make every sense about horses.

Why does 駚 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
