What 騂 means
It describes an animal with a red coat. Classical sources list “red horse,” “red sacrificial animal” and “red” as senses. In the Analects, a collection of sayings attributed to Confucius, 騂 describes a calf’s coat; 騂且角 adds that it had horns.
A related graph appears in oracle-bone inscriptions (divination writing on bones or shells) and bronze. 騂 is recorded on a writing strip from Juyan, China, in the Han-era; bronze inscriptions link red cattle with sacrifice in the Zhou dynasty. The variants of 騂 include 𩥍 and 骍.
