What 驏 means
It describes riding an animal without a saddle or reins. It can name the ride or the animal ridden that way; it does not mean “horse” by itself.
A Tang-era poem by Linghu Chu (令狐楚) uses 驏騎 for frontier riding without a saddle. Later dictionary definitions extend the word to other livestock, including 驏牛. A 2017 national Chinese dialect list records 驏 as a word for a bareback horse in Urumqi and notes the chafing caused by riding without a saddle.
A literary, specialized word suited to historical Chinese or translation.
The missing saddle is essential: 驏 does not mean a horse in general.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
