What 髦 means
髦 first names a prominent lock of hair.
The earliest literary evidence I can defend here is in the Classic of Songs, whose poems span c. 1100–600 BCE: 髧彼兩髦 describes two locks falling to a young person’s brow. Early commentary treats those locks as a child’s adornment while serving parents, so the word carried an age and filial-status signal.
The sense then widens from long hair to whatever stands out: 髦士 is an outstanding person, while 時髦 shifts that idea into what is fashionable. 髦 is built with 髟 and 毛; older sources also connect it with 旄, the yak-tail ornament on a flag.
What does a lone 髦 mean in a message?
A lone 髦 needs context.
Read the surrounding compound before choosing a gloss: 時髦 points to fashion, 髦士 to distinction, and 弁髦 to something treated as useless or beneath notice. If none is present, treat the character as literary or lexical rather than a ready-made reaction.
It is a typed CJK glyph, not vendor artwork, so a missing box or absent emoji result is an input or font problem. Type mao in a Chinese pinyin IME and select 髦, or use the palette.
Standalone 髦 is literary; modern readers are more likely to meet it inside 時髦.
Do not translate a lone 髦 as “fashionable” without a compound or context.

1Why does 髦 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
