What 髾 means
It names a trailing feature or ornament.
The earliest recorded use comes from China's Han dynasty. A 2024 dictionary entry says 髾 is absent from Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary, and lists hair ends, pointed clothing trim, and banner feathers.
A Han passage has two readings: an early explanation says hair behind a bun; Tang-dynasty commentator Yan Shigu reads a swallowtail-shaped clothing ornament. Mandarin pinyin, its roman-letter sound spelling, gives shāo: an “sh” sound, then a vowel sliding from open “a” toward “u,” at a high, level tone. 髟 marks the hair-related part; 肖 supplies the sound.
Literary; the passage identifies the sense.
Alone, 髾 does not reveal which referent is meant.

Questions people ask
1Why does 髾 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
