What 鬏 means
It can mean gathered hair or the piece that creates the style. A false bun could add height and hold pins or ornaments.
The old Chinese dictionary 《说文》 omits 鬏 but glosses the older related 髻 in its added section as “gathered hair.” A Yuan-era play by Guan Hanqing is an early cited example of 鬏. In Ming-era dress, 鬏髻 meant a false bun or hair cover made with hair, silver or gold wire, worn with formal ornaments.

1Why does 鬏 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
