Chinese character 鬡

19746/20992

鬡 is the second half of 鬇鬡, an old Chinese word for untidy hair or a bristling beard. On its own, 鬡 is not the usual written form.

Text symbol

What 鬡 means

It describes disordered hair in 鬇鬡.

The Buddhist scripture 大乘大集地藏十輪經, translated into Chinese in 651–652, uses 鬇鬡髮 for a rakshasa mother's hair; a rakshasa is a demon-like being in Buddhist stories.

Dictionaries gloss 鬇鬡 as disordered hair or beard. Poetry of the Tang dynasty uses it for a bristling beard; writer Yuan Zhen and the later strange-tale collection 聊齋志異 apply the image to ugly or strange-looking people.

Literary and old-fashioned outside 鬇鬡 or historical writing.

For the documented word, use 鬇鬡; 鬡 alone is unusual.

Why is 鬡 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
