cjk unified ideograph-9b52

CJK Unified Ideograph-9B52

魒 is an archaic star-name character, read piāo. Daoist texts place it at the end of a seven-name set for the Big Dipper, alongside titles such as 天沖 and 破軍. It is a specialist historical reference, not a generic ghost symbol.

What 魒 means

魒 names an old stellar figure. It is read piāo; dictionaries give it a star-related sense, not a generic ghost or demon.

The earliest lexicographic record I found is in the Yupian, compiled around 543. The Taiwan Ministry of Education says Shuowen does not record it, then cites Yupian “star” and later Leipian “Dipper-star name.” That is a narrowing of description, not evidence of a modern meaning.

What is 魒 doing in Daoist texts?

魒 closes a Daoist list of seven star names. It follows 魁, 𩲃, 𩵄, 䰢, 魓, and 𩳐; one text gives this star the names 天沖 and 破軍. Its purpose was ritual naming and visualization.

Another passage assigns 魒 to the right kidney in a body map. Later Daoist texts repeat the seven-character sequence as a recited set; translate the isolated character as a historical star name, keeping the ritual context for its exact title.

How do you type 魒?

Use piāo in a Chinese IME, or enter Cangjie HIMWF. Wubi RQCI is another listed route; otherwise copy it from the palette above rather than guessing from 魅 or 魑.

Under regional CJK font settings, the glyph may change while the character stays the same. A blank box means the active font lacks coverage; try a broad CJK font.

Archaic and Daoist; it signals a specialist textual reference, not casual chat.

Sent alone, it needs context; do not translate it as “ghost” just because of 鬼.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 魒 look different in Chinese and Japanese fonts?

It can. Regional CJK fonts use different glyph conventions for the same Han character, so changed strokes are typographic.

Why is 魒 a blank square on my device?

It can happen. The active font may lack this rare glyph; try a broad CJK font or use the palette.
