What 魨 means

It means “pufferfish.” In Chinese writing, 魨 appears in 河魨, a name for the fish. The 玉篇, a Chinese dictionary compiled around 543, is the earliest dictionary witness for the character.

The early Chinese character dictionary 說文 does not record it, according to the Taiwan Ministry of Education's 2024 entry. Chinese sources link 魨 with 河豚 and 河魨, and with the older name 鯸鮧. A 2021 study records older Korean and Japanese names for pufferfish before 河豚 spread across the region. Japanese dictionaries also give ふぐ, the Japanese word for pufferfish, as a reading for 魨.

Why does 魨 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
