What 魶 means
Older dictionaries use 魶 for aquatic-animal names, not one settled species.
A literary tradition from the Western Han, an early Chinese dynasty, links 魶 to Sima Xiangru’s poem 《上林賦》, preserved in 《史記》, a historical book. There it appears among aquatic-animal names.
The left component 魚 is the fish part; 內 is the sound component, a clue to pronunciation. The structure places 魶 in fish vocabulary but does not identify one definite species.
Why do dictionaries disagree about 魶?
They preserve different lexical and regional traditions.
Different dictionaries attach 魶 to different animals: a turtle-like fish without a shell; 鯢, a four-legged river animal whose call was described as childlike; and, in other glosses, a whale or fish-eagle.
Commentary on an early passage records 鰨 as a variant. Li Shizhen’s 《本草綱目》, a Chinese reference book on medicinal substances, says Shu and Qin, two historical Chinese states, used 魶 and 鰨 respectively for the 鯢 animal.
Can I send 魶 as an emoji?
It has no standard reaction meaning.
As of 2026, 魶 has no standard emoji presentation; it is a text character. If someone sends it alone, ask what they mean: the glyph by itself does not establish a reaction or one definite animal.
Lexicographic and specialist; in a modern message it reads as a deliberate rare-character choice, often tied to a text or dictionary.
Don’t assume a fixed animal or treat it as a fish emoji.
