What 魹 means
It means とど (“toh-doh”), the Steller sea lion.
Kamaishi, a Japanese coastal city, reports animal remains from around 2000–1800 BCE. The reading とど appears in 出雲風土記, a regional chronicle from 733; a local memorial records fishing for the animal in 1858.
This Japanese-made character joins 魚 (fish) and 毛 (hair) to evoke the sea lion’s mane. Older Japanese and Ainu sources use different names for seals and sea lions; 海馬 and 胡獱 are alternative Japanese names for it.
