What 魿 means
It can name a fish, mean fish scales, or describe winding movement.
Reference works give 魿 a fish-name sense, a fish-scale sense linked to 鱗, and a sense for a small creature moving in a winding line. A Tang-era account describes 魿魚 as a white-fish-like river fish with a shorter tail, served sliced or roasted and praised for its taste. That is the clearest surviving reason this character appears in old food writing.
Warring States period Chu bamboo slips contain 𩸍 in 《禹王天下》; a Western Han period bamboo-slip text, 《妄稽》, contains 魿. Bamboo slips are thin strips of bamboo used for writing. A study published in 2015 treats 魿腊 and 𩸍䱜 as alternate writings of one expression. Its reading remains disputed: proposals include scales, dry cracked skin, and a fish term.
