What 鮉 means
鮉 is a recorded variant of 鯛, the character for sea bream.
The Eastern Han 說文解字, an early Chinese dictionary, describes 鯛 with a phrase about hard bones and has no separate entry for 鮉. The later Chinese rhyme dictionary 集韻, a reference arranged by sound and rhyme, records 鮉 as equivalent to 鯛.
The Mandarin reading is diāo, with d, i, and an ao glide joined in one syllable at a high, level tone. Japanese readings include たい, with both vowels heard, and チョウ, with a long o; たい names the sea bream.
