What 鮷 means
It names a fish, with an early gloss of “large catfish.”
The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary completed around 100 CE, glosses 鮷 as 大鮎 (“large catfish”). Its analysis assigns 魚 the fish meaning and 弟 the sound.
Later dictionaries link 鮷 with 鯷 and 鮧, but their spellings and glosses are not interchangeable by default. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education lists 鯷 as the standard form and gives it an anchovy-like sea-fish sense, while older glosses keep the catfish meaning. Japanese dictionaries also record namazu (なまず, the Japanese word for catfish) and sukesō (すけそう) as readings.
How do you type 鮷?
Use a Chinese input method with rare-character search.
Enter Mandarin pinyin tí and check the candidates. If 鮷 is missing, try handwriting or stroke search; those routes help when a standard candidate list omits a rare form.
A Cangjie reference lists NFCNH for 鮷; enter it in a Cangjie input method with rare characters enabled. Different fonts may draw the strokes differently, but the character remains the same.
Archival and specialist: it points to fish-name dictionaries, variant-form notes, or classical writing.
On its own, its strokes can be mistaken for 鯷 or 鮧; compare the right-hand component.

1Why does 鮷 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
