Whale Character

鯨 means “whale,” with a long history behind its fish radical.

The surviving evidence supports an evolved graph rather than a named inventor. The earliest written evidence verified here is a Spring and Autumn tradition dated around the 3rd–4th century BCE; later tradition records 䲔 as the older form and 鯨 as a variant using 京 beside 魚.

That fish element reflects the category used by the character's makers, not modern zoology. Its original job was practical: naming a very large sea animal.

What does 鯨 mean in Japanese?

In Japanese, read it as kujira alone and gei in compounds.

The same glyph crosses languages with different readings: Chinese uses jīng; Japanese uses くじら when the word stands alone and ゲイ in compounds. Japanese also preserves いさな or 勇魚, an older “brave fish” name, while クジラ is a normal kana spelling.

In Japanese historical sources, 鯨 can sit inside a whaling, food, festival, or memorial frame. In Chinese compounds, it can stretch from the animal to “great” or “huge.” The older 䲔–鯢 pairing is a historical relation, not a modern synonym list.

How do I type 鯨?

Use a Chinese pinyin or Japanese kana IME, then select the character.

Chinese IME: type jing and select 鯨; simplified-Chinese input will normally offer 鲸 instead. Japanese IME: type kujira for the native reading or gei for a compound, then choose 鯨; use クジラ when kana is the intended style.

Do not diagnose a missing whale emoji: 鯨 is a font-drawn text glyph. Regional fonts may shape it differently, and 鲸 is a script variant, not a different animal.
