What 鱉 means
It means “soft-shelled turtle” in Chinese.
The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, records the older graph 鼈 around 100 CE. In that graph, 黽 marks the animal class and 敝 supplies the sound; character dictionaries also list 鼈 as a variant of 鱉.
The word can also name fern shoots. 魚鱉 groups fish and soft-shelled turtles as edible aquatic life; 鱉悶 and 鱉燥 describe pent-up frustration or agitation.
Neutral as an animal name; compounds can be literary, figurative, or insulting.
鱉鳥 is an insult for a stubborn person, not a neutral animal reference.
