Text symbol

What 鲴 means

It names fish anatomy and, later, fish.

The Song-period Guangyun, a medieval Chinese rhyme dictionary, defines 鯝 as the intestines inside a fish. Later dictionaries also list fish stomach and names for yellow fish; 鲴 is the simplified form of 鯝.

Taiwan fisheries sources use 鯝魚 for freshwater fish, including Taiwan shovel-jaw carp, also called 苦花 or 苦偎. A Tsou cultural account describes 鯝魚 as prized food and the fish used in the millet-sowing ceremony.

Specialist and regional: an isolated 鲴 needs its surrounding words to show whether it means fish anatomy or a fish name.

1

Why does 鲴 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
