What 鳮 means
It names the same bird as 雞, 鷄, and 鸡.
Its ancestor is ancient: records list oracle-bone evidence and late-Shang bronze inscriptions for 雞. Classical glosses describe it as a domestic bird that knows the time; 鷄 is the 籀文 form written with 鳥. 鳮 keeps that reading in a compact 又鳥 shape.
Its job was orthographic economy. The form appears in the ROC list of 1935 and Singapore’s list of 1969. The change was standardization, not a new meaning. What looks different across fonts is font rendering, not emoji artwork.
Historical and specialist; it marks an alternate standard, not a new meaning.
For mainland simplified Chinese, write 鸡.

1Why does 鳮 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
