What 鳷 means
The earliest attested use of 鳷 is in Han dynasty texts. Sima Xiangru’s Shanglin Fu, a poem about Emperor Wu’s imperial parks, places 鳷鵲 among the sights. The Han dynasty dictionary Shuowen Jiezi does not list 鳷; later rhyme dictionaries preserve it.
Other records name 鳷鵲觀 outside Ganquan, within the imperial building landscape associated with Emperor Wu’s search for immortals. In older sources, 鳷鵲 is also a bird name, glossed as a jay or an unfamiliar bird. By the Southern Dynasties, 鳷鵲樓 named a pavilion near Nanjing; Later literature uses the name as an allusion to grand or deserted architecture.
