What 鷈 means
It names a grebe, a diving waterbird, in traditional Chinese.
The Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100 CE, records it in 𪇊鷈. The entry analyzes 鷈 as 鳥, meaning bird, plus 虒, a sound component. Later dictionaries keep the bird sense.
Is 鷈 the same as 鷉 or 䴘?
They are variant graphs used in the same bird-name tradition.
Taiwan's Ministry of Education lists 鷉, 𩀗, and 𪁦 as variants of 鷈. Chinese dictionaries also use simplified 䴘. The first character varies too: 鸊鷈 and 鷿鷈 name the same bird. Mandarin sources give tī, with a level first tone and an ee-like vowel, or tí, with a rising second tone and the same vowel.
What should I read into 鷈 sent alone?
Read it as text about a bird unless context says more.
On its own, 鷈 names a bird; it does not show a clear attitude. It may be a quotation, a character sample, or the bird word itself. Surrounding text decides whether the sender means anything more.
Specialist written Chinese for a bird name or historical text; as a casual reply, it needs surrounding words to read as more than literal text.
Keep 鷈 when transcribing a source that uses it.

1Why does 鷈 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
