What 鷖 means
A classical character for water birds, especially gulls.
Bronze forms date to the Western Zhou. The early Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi (說文解字) analyzes 鷖 as 鳥 (“bird”) plus 殹 for sound.
The Shijing (詩經, Book of Songs), an early poetry collection, uses 鳧鷖 for water birds; later Chuci (楚辭, Songs of Chu) commentary calls 鷖 a phoenix. Zhouli (周禮, Rites of Zhou), on ritual and government, uses it for blue-black silk or its color.
