What 鹿 means
鹿 is the Chinese character for deer. Japanese also uses it as a kanji; Korean uses it as Hanja, a Chinese-derived character. Its recognizable form appears in late Shang inscriptions carved on oracle bones—animal bones and turtle shells used for divination. Later bronze forms preserve a pictorial shape emphasizing the antlers. A carved deer skull records a royal hunt. Shang hunts also trained troops for war, and captured deer could be offered to ancestors.
In the Chinese idiom 逐鹿, “chasing the deer” means competing for the throne. In Qing-era Chinese decorative art, deer could signal official rank and good fortune because 鹿 sounds like 禄, a word for an official's pay and benefits. The related character 麋 names a distinct deer, the elaphure.
What does 鹿 mean in a message?
Check the language and nearby words first. A bare 鹿 may stand for the animal or point to a literary or auspicious use; without surrounding text, it does not identify which reading the sender intends.
Japanese readings include shika or ka for deer, and roku in compounds; Korean Hanja readings are rok or nok. In Chinese, 鹿 and 禄 sound alike. CJK fonts may draw the same character with slightly different proportions.
Literal in ordinary Chinese text; literary in 逐鹿; auspicious in Chinese decorative art through the 鹿–禄 sound pun.
A bare 鹿 does not reveal which language or allusion the sender intends.

1Why does 鹿 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
