What does 麳 mean?
It names wheat; one old dictionary specifies small wheat. An early Chinese character dictionary, 《说文解字》, records 䅘 as a regional Qi word for wheat. Its commentary links 䅘 and 麳 to an older wheat sense of 來: 麳 combines 麥 (wheat) and 來, while 䅘 combines 禾 (grain) and 來.
A later dictionary, 《广雅》, distinguishes 麳 as small wheat from 麰, barley. Agricultural and dictionary lists pair the two grains as 麳麰. In modern Chinese, 來 is the separate character for “come”; its older wheat sense belongs to this historical word family.
A classical and lexicographic wheat term, at home in historical or agricultural writing.
